Vitamin E now a focus of the investigation into some vaping illnesses

Wisconsin public health officials said late last month that 89% of the people they interviewed who became sick reported using e-cigarettes or other vaping devices to inhale THC. Many patients have told officials and clinicians that they bought cannabis products off the street. That is a commonly available nutritional supplement not known to cause harm when taken as a vitamin supplement or applied to the skin.

Those who have suffered from the lung illness reported experiencing shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever or weight loss.

E-cigarettes, which have been available in the US since about 2007 and have grown into a more than $6 billion-a-year industry, are battery-powered devices that typically heat a flavored nicotine solution into an inhalable aerosol.

At least two people who developed severe respiratory illnesses after vaping have died and there are at least 215 other cases of severe lung disease that may be tied to the activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

They also acknowledged preliminary findings released Thursday by NY officials that vitamin E acetate could be responsible for the illnesses there - particularly among people who vaped cannabis products and fell ill there. "This includes investigating the brand and types of e-cigarette products, whether any of them are products that would fall within FDA's regulatory authority, as well as where they were obtained".

FDA officials also revealed to NY health officials there was nothing unusual found in nicotine products but the investigation still is ongoing. "In general, vaping of unknown substances is risky, and we continue to explore all options to combat this public health issue".

"More information is needed to better understand whether there's a relationship between any specific products or substances and the reported illnesses", FDA senior adviser Michael Felberbaum says in an emailed statement Thursday. Authorities said they are not ruling out adulterants in nicotine vaping products.

Aviv Hadar, Oregrown Industries owner, said he and other OR producers can buy any kind of cartridges for their products that they want.

Last week, Cappello confirmed the second vaping case in Colorado.

An FDA spokesman said the agency is "looking into potential leads regarding any particular constituent or compound that may be at issue".

The liquor control commission would recall a THC product if health officials determine it isn't safe, Pettinger said.

It's not yet clear if there is a common cause or if patients are suffering from different conditions with similar symptoms, the officials said. Unlike nicotine, THC can be delivered only via oils when vaping. It's a nasty concept to modify vaping products or use substances not intended by the manufacturer.

If you use e-cigarette products, monitor yourself for symptoms and promptly seek medical attention if you have concerns about your health. Any time extra cells come in, "they get in the way of gas exchange", she said. He now believes Juuls caused his lung injury.
