Allen, Bills overcome 16-point deficit, stun Jets

Allen, Bills overcome 16-point deficit, stun Jets

The first NFL Sunday is in the books and there's a lot to go over.

Less than a week ago, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold said Gase's new offense would be "electric", but that definitely wasn't the word Gase used to describe his team after watching his offense put up just 225 yards against Buffalo.

Allen has already said that he knows there are certain types of passes that he should not be making, but we continues to make a few head scratching throws every game. Adversity, you take it and you either run together and run toward each other, or run away.

Jamison Crowder showed he can be a reliable target for Darnold by catching 14 passes in his Jets debut - although he gained only 99 yards. But they gave Allen and his teammates on offense a chance to win and they capitalized. Roberts being ruled out opens up more snaps for Zay Jones and Robert Foster, but neither are worth starting with John Brown and Cole Beasley looking like the No. 1 and No. 2 options for Josh Allen. Gase went 23-25 during three seasons in Miami and missed the playoffs in the last two after guiding the Dolphins to a wild-card berth in 2016.

Turnovers were an issue for Allen during his rookie season, when he finished with 12 interceptions and lost two fumbles.

It was New York's defense, though, that shined early and into the second half as big summer signing C.J. Mosley led a ball-hawking defense with an interception return for a touchdown on Buffalo's second possession and was one of four takeaways the Jets recorded.

Darnold was a big part of the problem for the Jets.

After another stop from the Bills defense, their counterparts on offense responded with their first touchdown of the year, as Allen scrambled for a three-yard touchdown.

The offensive line struggled at times, with center Ryan Kalil playing with Darnold for the first time since coming out of retirement last month. Darnold was sacked four times and was pressured almost every time he dropped back to pass.

Adam Gase sounded just like most Jets fans a day after a brutal, stunning loss Sunday. I also like the Jets' skill position players better and if they come out of the gates strong despite this being Gase's first game with Gang Green, NY should get a win and a cover in Week 1.

Darnold completed 28 of 41 passes (68.3 percent) for 175 yards (6.25 average) and a nine-yard touchdown to running back Le'Veon Bell.

If Gase doesn't figure how to get his offense jumpstarted soon, the 2019 season could turn into a disastrous one for the Jets.
