It's by no means a secret.

Like all future ID. models, the ID.3 is based on the new modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which has been designed for an electric drive system without compromise.

Volkswagen didn't offer much detail into how exactly this was accomplished but it claims that the ID.3's battery production, supply chain, and assembly will make it the first vehicle to be completely carbon neutral when it leaves the factory floor and is delivered into the hands of customers.

The base ID.3 First Edition comes with satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio, heated seats and steering wheel, armrests at the front, a Mode 2 charging cable, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

"In around ten years nearly half of the Group's cars in Europe and China will be electric". This is the first electric vehicle based on the electric MEB platform, and Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess wants to make a big difference. The front of the ID 3 features a friendly face that's nearly smiling.

The ID.3 is as futuristic as you'd expect in the cabin.

The firm's MEB platform dedicated to electric models maximises wheelbase with short overhangs front and rear for an interior which Volkswagen says sets new standards in the compact class; the ID. The brand has made clear though, that they do not see it as the task of ID.3 to be a pioneer in driving assistants, with other brands in the Group taking up this gauntlet. The ID.3 Basic Variant costs 30,000 euros ($33,000) while prices for the mid and long-range variant are yet to be announced.

Looks may be subjective, but there's no denying the ID.3 stands out among the ICE-powered cars offered by the VW core brand. A 48-, 58-, or 77-kwh battery pack sits in between the axles below the floor.

Battery packs available in three capacities: 45kWh, 58kWh and 77kWh.

The Volkswagen ID 3 will enter production later this year but will not be sold in the U.S. Thanks to its fast charging capability, it is possible to charge the ID.3 sufficiently for a range of around 290km within 30 minutes, using a charging output of 100kW.

For the first generation of buyers, Volkswagen is offering free charging for a year at WeCharge network stations throughout Europe.

ID.3's batteries are located in the underbody of the chassis which the company say will aid driving experience by moving the centre of gravity lower. The company has not yet revealed specific torque or horsepower numbers, nor performance figures. And over the years people, new vehicle buyers, will forget about dieselgate because they have already moved on. There will be 13 cubic feet of storage space behind the second-row seats.

The Volkswagen ID 3 is the first auto from its all-electric ID sub-brand and is expected to be the next great mass-market vehicle for the brand after the Beetle and Golf. There's also an optional, augmented-reality, or AR, head-up display system. Only the electric windows and hazard warning lights use conventional tactile switches. Occupants can also make use of "intelligent natural voice control". "Visually, ID. Light signals to whom the ID.3 is now responding".

The five-seat ID.3 will go into production in the middle of next year, with initial deliveries going to Europe before expanding into China and North America.
