University of MI climbs in latest U.S

The University of SC has the top first-year student experience among the nation's public universities, according to U.S. News and World Report's annual undergraduate rankings released Monday (Sept. 9).

It was also included on two specialty rankings lists: "Most Innovative Schools" and "Best Value Schools".

The No. 1-ranked undergraduate business program overall is at the University of Pennsylvania; other schools ranking in the top five include Berkeley, the University of MI at Ann Arbor, New York University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Texas at Austin. 5 among public universities in the northeast and No. 48 among all colleges in the northeast, up eight spots from last year's rankings.

The magazine ranked 388 national universities, defined as institutions offering a "full range of undergraduate majors" as well as master's and doctoral programs. This year, Penn State is tied with Florida State, Purdue, University of Miami and this week's football opponent the University of Pittsburgh at No. 57 out of 399 private and public schools. This year's jump is the greatest single-year increase in university history.

Locally, St. Edward's University comes in eighth on the Regional Universities West ranking, and Southwestern University took the 92nd spot on the National Liberal Arts Colleges list.

The University of Florida was the best Florida school on the list, coming in at #34 in the nation.

Among other northern New England states' flagship public schools, the University of Vermont ranked 55th among public universities and 121st among all universities. "It clearly demonstrates that the University of Florida is on an unstoppable trajectory", said Mori Hosseini, chairman of the UF Board of Trustees.

In addition, UF's undergraduate business programs saw a significant rise from No. 30 last year to No. 22 this year.

"Seton Hill is honored to once again be recognized among the best regional universities in the north by U.S. News & World Report", said Finger.

Best Colleges Rankings evaluate each institution across 15 measures of academic quality, including the percentage of full-time faculty and financial resources per student.

"We are thrilled to see our progress reflected in this year's numbers", says Jean Morrison, University provost and chief academic officer. ISU two years ago was at No. 115 overall and No. 111 the year before that.

In the national universities category, the University of California campuses led, but not Berkeley and UCLA.

Princeton and Harvard clocked in at first and second place, respectively, for best National Universities, with a three-way tie for third: Columbia, MIT, and Yale.
