Two people have been killed in a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle and police said they were looking for suspects who fled the scene.

"The suspected perpetrators fled in a auto", said police on Twitter, urging residents in the area to stay indoors. It did not give any details of the person arrested and said police were in the process of stabilising the situation.

Police said that at least one person has been detained but asked residents to "remain alert".

He added that several people had been injured, in addition to the two killed. Police later said one person had been arrested. It remains unclear, however, whether the synagogue is related to the shooting, although it took place the same day as Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism.

"Several shots were fired".

Police didn't give any further information, but said officers were out in force in the city hunting down the suspects.

According to MZ information, police units are all now being moved to Halle, as this is a "special situation".

Bild, a German daily, reported a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon and lobbed a hand grenade into a nearby cemetery.
