Air Force F-16 crashes in Germany, pilot suffers minor injuries

An American F-16 fighter jet crashed Tuesday near the city of Trier in western Germany, the German air force told AFP, with the pilot surviving after using the ejector seat.

The newspaper reports that the police said the jet crashed in the Zemmer area, between the city of Trier and the US Air Force's Spangdahlem Air Base.

The fighter jet crashed at about 3 p.m. local time near Zemmer, south of the base.

"The pilot ejected safely and has been recovered with minor injuries", the report said.

It said the crash happened about 20 kilometres north of Trier in Trier-Saarburg district, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. "A board of officers will investigate the accident".

The news comes just a week after two USA airmen were killed at the Spangdahlem base in a fiery auto crash.

One pilot was rescued but the other had become tangled with a high-voltage power line and was left hanging from his parachute.

Less than a week later, a helicopter pilot died when his aircraft crashed near an army training centre.

The aircraft was assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron at the base.
