Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. seriously injured in vehicle crash

According to Dallas police, Spence was driving his Ferrari at "a high rate of speed" at 2:53 a.m. when the vehicle veered over a meridian and flipped multiple times.

According to a report from CBS 11 in Dallas-Fort Worth, welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. has been seriously injured in a rollover auto crash in Dallas. "The doctors are monitoring his condition, but his injuries are not life-threatening. His parents are with him at the hospital", Tim Smith, a spokesman for Spence's promotor, Premier Boxing Champions, told The Associated Press.

A Dallas Police statement said: "At 2:53am a Ferrari traveling at a high rate of speed northbound in the 500 S. Riverfront Blvd".

With his rangy athleticism and virtuosic skill, Spence, who is 26-0 with 21 knockouts, has captured fans with a series of crisp victories in recent years.

He's expected to survive, police said.

CBS 11 further reported that authorities are investigating, as to whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

He won the IBF welterweight title in 2017, and last fought on September 28 when he defeated Shawn Porter in a split decision to become the unified welterweight champion.

Spence Jr. defeated Shawn Porter in the Staples Center in late December.
