Andy Rubin’s Essential Is Back with "Radically Different" Extra-Shiny Phone

Andy Rubin’s Essential Is Back with

Essential, the smartphone company founded by Android co-founder, ex-Googler Andy Rubin, is working on a new device - a very unusual one.

Rubin posted a series of photos and a video of the odd-looking Essential Phone devices that looked elongated than usual with a rather tall UI and a large button on the right side of the device. The only full-screen app shown is a mapping/navigation app that doesn't look like Google Maps.

Project GEM will be packed inside a narrow and tall design, resembling that of a Smart TV remote but with smartphone capabilities. With this Project GEM teaser, we see the lights may also be focused on much more than software updates for a two year old phone. According to their Twitter post, Essential have been now working on the above phone which has been titled "ProjectGEM".

It is clear from the Official Twitter account of Essential which confirms the company's new phone is in the testing phase, adding that: "We've been working on a new device to reframe your perspective on mobile". Although, Google might not certify this device because the form factor is so odd - it just can't render most apps correctly.

Bloomberg has reported a year ago that Essential was creating an AI phone that was supposed to mimic its owner and reply messages on their behalf. Rubin's shared the images and video of the new essential phone via his twitter handle.

The device seems to be running Android judging by the back and home buttons at the top of the phone. The new smartphone features a shiny, reflective rear panel with "GEM colour-shift material".

Rubin is among the cofounders of Android, as noted, and is the founder and CEO of Essential.

The device is unquie and one of its own kind and its something that is never seen before.

The next Essential product is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 and is now being developed on top of Android 10.
