Department of Health offers free drive-thru flu shot clinic next month

Pharmacists can administer the free flu shot to residents five years and older, during home visits, and in congregate living settings. And people over 50, especially over 65 years old have a weakened system in terms of responding to sicknesses. Strains of the flu virus are constantly changing, so a new flu vaccine is made each year.

Anyone over 6 months old should be getting their flu shot, even if you haven't gotten the flu before. Flu activity usually begins to increase in October and can last as late as May, with cases typically peaking between December and February. Nurses and doctors said while there are ways to prevent the flu, getting a shot is the first line of defense. The high-dose flu shot contains four times as much active ingredient as a regular flu shot to provide better immunity.

"As much as 10 percent of the US workforce will get the flu this year, with 17 million workdays lost as a result", said Cline. 57% said yes they would get the flu shot, 43% said they would not.

Symptoms of influenza can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Because the strain of the virus changes every year, a flu shot is needed annually, according to the health department.

She was speaking as UL Hospitals Group and HSE Mid West Community Healthcare this Thursday joined forces to launch their own internal flu campaigns aimed at vaccinating thousands of healthcare workers in community, primary, mental health and acute hospital settings across Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary.

The annual Morgan County Health Department's Flu Bowl is happening today and tomorrow at the JHS Bowl at 215 S. Church Street.
