Potential first overall pick Chase Young sidelined amid NCAA investigation

The exact details about the potential NCAA violation remains unclear at this time.

Ohio State (8-0) is No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings. By recording four sacks in a 38-7 victory over Wisconsin in the Buckeyes' last game on October 26, Young thrust himself into the national Heisman Trophy conversation.

Ohio State released a statement to Austin Ward of Lettermen Row, confirming the news.

On Friday, Ohio State announced that Young will sit out the Maryland game due to "a possible NCAA issue from 2018 that the Department of Athletics is looking into".

"I want to thank my family, teammates, coaches and the whole Ohio State community for all the love and support".

Young was not made available to the media during interviews this week, which is somewhat unusual for a star player during the week of a game against his home state school.

Young was having an all-time season before this abrupt announcement. The junior was a preseason AP All-American and is projected to be one of the first players taken in next year's National Football League draft. Whether that's because of an injury like Bosa, or whether it's one of the many top draft prospects who have skipped their teams' bowl games, it just isn't an issue.

Young leads the nation in sacks with 13.5 after a dominant performance two weeks ago against Wisconsin that thrust him into the Heisman Trophy race.

Arguably the best college football player in the country is facing an indefinite suspension.

It's not yet clear how long a potential suspension could last.
