Madrid Midfielder Partey Rues Mistakes In Defeat Against Bayer Leverkusen

Thomas Partey put the ball into his own net as Atletico Madrid lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena in Group D of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

It has been more than 15 years since a team managed to progress in the Champions League despite losing their first three games when Newcastle United managed to finish second in 2002/03 group stages by winning all of their last three games.

A freakish Thomas Partey own goal gave Leverkusen the lead on 41 minutes at the BayArena before Germany global Kevin Volland bagged a second shortly after the break.

Leverkusen extended their lead 10 minutes after the break.

Bayer Leverkusen's win over Atlético Madrid is important from a mental perspective, says Kevin Volland.

Thomas Lemar and Vitolo were sent on by Simeone and Atletico did improve somewhat, with Saul and Morata both having chances before the latter scored a goal in the 75th minute from a Vitolo pass that was ruled out for offside.

Tempers started to flare at this point and four players were booked after a brawl broke out at another German corner, before Nadiem Amiri was shown a straight red for a lunge at Santiago Arias. In their next attack, the ball again fell perfectly for Morata in the penalty area but goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky saved the shot with his legs.

Leverkusen remain rock bottom on Group D despite taking their first win, but now have the same amount of points as third-placed Lokomotiv Moscow.
