Colts promote Chad Kelly to active roster amid Jacoby Brissett knee injury

Brissett, who has started all eight games for the Colts this season, left Sunday's game at Pittsburgh in the first half with what turned out to be a sprained MCL in his left knee.

Throughout this week there were questions about Jacoby Brissett's availability for this Sunday's matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

Brissett (knee) had been listed as questionable and was limited in practice this week.

Kelly completed 54 of 73 passes for 583 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in four preseason games with the Colts this summer, then was signed to the practice squad on September 19. This means Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback against the Dolphins.

If Brissett is inactive on Sunday, then the team could sign practice squad quarterback Chad Kelly to its active roster.

Hoyer completed 17-of-26 pass attempts for 168 yards, three touchdowns and an interception against the Steelers.

But Saturday, the Colts announced Brissett wouldn't play and promoted third-string quarterback Chad Kelly from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Colts also downgraded cornerback Pierre Desir to doubtful. Colts also waived wide receiver Deon Cain and defensive tackle Kyle Peko.

The Colts lost Andrew Luck to a surprise retirement in the offseason, but Brissett took over and played well, helping the Colts get into first place in the AFC South at the halfway point of the season.
