The White House's official Christmas tree for the year is a 16-year-old Douglas Fir on display in the Blue Room, according to the White House Twitter account. She adds that she's "delighted to share this lovely exhibit of patriotism for all to see".

"It is with great joy that our family welcomes you to the White House this holiday season as we celebrate the Spirit of America", President Donald Trump, the first lady and their son, Barron, say in the signed introduction to a souvenir book that visitors will receive as a holiday keepsake.

The East Wing's Gold Star Family Tree, in honor of those who lost an immediate family member serving in the armed forces, is decorated with gold stars and red, white and blue ribbon.

This year's gingerbread house features the White House and iconic American landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge in California, the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington, South Dakota's Mount Rushmore, The Alamo in Texas, the Gateway Arch of St. Louis, the Liberty Bell in Philidelphia, and New York City's Statue of Liberty.

The decorations include more than 15,000 bows, 200 pounds of gingerbread, and 58 Christmas trees, the statement said.

"The Spirit of America" appears to strike a balance between traditional displays and Melania Trump's flair for cutting-edge style.

Compared to those choices, critics may have a tough time taking issue with this year's relatively traditional decoration decisions.
