Student in custody after shooting at Milwaukee-area school

A student at Waukesha North High School was arrested Monday after a report that they had a gun at the school, police say.

The incident occurred after the student pulled out a handgun and did not respond to the school resource officer's insistence that he give it up.

The school was placed on lockdown and searched.

There is no word yet on how bad the student, whose name has not been released, was injured. Jack says the resource officer went to the classroom to confront the student and get students in the room to safety.

Waukesha police and sheriff's deputies soon arrived at the school and tried to de-escalate the situation to no avail. The officer who shot the student is an 11-year-veteran of the police department, Jack said. She said the school would issue a statement later. They didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking additional detail. The Waukesha Freeman reported a male was put into an ambulance.

Officials told KTLA sister station WITI in Milwaukee that gunshots were fired inside the school. They say they are not seeking any other suspects at this time.
