We never give up - Guardiola defends misfiring Man City stars

Holding midfielder Fernandinho has had to fill the void in the meantime, with Guardiola rotating between Otamendi and Stones to partner the Brazilian.

City are now third in the Premier League table; 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Yet Guardiola has no intention of moving the 34-year-old back into his preferred role.

Asked why Guardiola has not picked Stones and Otamendi together since the 3-2 league defeat against Norwich in September, he replied: "Because I like Fernandinho in that position".

Summer signing Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan have been chosen over three-time Premier League victor Fernandinho in midfield by the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss.

"What Sean Dyche teams play, the way he plays they do ideal, so they have incredible success in the last years in the Premier League doing what they have done", Guardiola said. Of course, it's not good for us. Sergio Aguero scored the only goal of the match which gave Manchester City the victory.

"Right now yes", said Guardiola.

But Guardiola said he would continue playing Fernandinho at the heart of his backline rather than restoring him to midfield, even though Ilkay Gundogan is suspended for the tough test at Turf Moor.

City will then take on rivals Manchester United in the Manchester derby, before also facing Arsenal and Leicester City.

"They have to believe we win tomorrow", he said.

During Laporte's absence, the defending English champions have slipped to third in the standings and they are a massive 11 points behind table-toppers Liverpool, who are unbeaten from their 14 league matches. That is the fact. We played well with the ball, we were solid, we conceded few counter-attacks, but football is how many goals you score and how you don't concede. We have to think about what we have to do to win the games and play quite similar to recent games, especially like Newcastle and, except for 20-25 minutes, against Chelsea.

As a result, Man City really can't afford to drop any more points for the foreseeable future.

"It is always hard for all teams (at Burnley)". It's not like last season when we were here when we played not well.
