Lisa Smith's solicitor says case against her is 'inherently weak'

In the case of Ms Smith's child, established procedures for her care will be followed.

Irish police said: 'This day, Sunday 1st December 2019, at Dublin Airport, An Garda Siochana has arrested an Irish Citizen (38 one year used female) on suspicion of terrorist offences following her deportation from Turkey.

Ms Smith had been due to fly home on Saturday but her return was delayed by a minor technical hitch and she eventually boarded the first Turkish Airlines flight out of Istanbul to Dublin early yesterday.

She was taken directly from the airport to the station after being arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows detectives to detain her without charge for an initial 48 hours, and then extended to 72 hours. But Dublin has said it accepted the right of Smith and her daughter - an Irish citizen by virtue of her mother's nationality - to return to Ireland. Her daughter is now in the care of Smith's relatives in her native town, Dundalk.

Photographs showed a woman descending the steps, her face hidden by a pink blanket.

Another Dublin passenger, who asked not to be named, said he recognised her straight away.

Garda Special Branch and military intelligence have been investigating Ms Smith's background and her activities, and months of painstaking investigating will inform their questioning of Ms Smith in the coming days.

Significant numbers of Europeans left for Syria to fight for and against IS during a bloody war which destroyed the Middle Eastern country and produced millions of refugees.

Varadkar had previously said that a security assessment would need to be carried out to ensure that Smith "does not become a threat to life and limb in Ireland".

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said: "This is a sensitive case and I want to reassure people that all relevant state agencies are closely involved".

'A multi-agency network is in plan here comprising agency personnel who select on an ongoing foundation with global colleagues in relation to emerging practice in relation to the complex be concerned of radicalisation. We can all criticise her for taking off to join ISIS.

Ms Begum claims she married Dutch convert Yago Riedijk 10 days after arriving in IS territory.

Her third child died shortly after he was born.
