Her speech that day in Oakland, California, had more than 20,000 people in attendance, giving credence to the idea that she could become the first woman of color elected president.

Despite beginning the race as a serious contender for the Oval Office - she regularly polled as a top-tier candidate - her campaign has struggled to maintain its momentum, plummeting in the polls amid reports of turmoil among campaign staff and the lack of a clear strategy.

Steyer is the seventh candidate to qualify for the December debate stage, where he will join Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren.

The senator's presidential hopes were amplified by a sudden boost of support after a breakthrough moment during the first Democratic presidential debate.

Back in October, Harris' campaign laid off dozens of staffers and reorganized their team for a go-for-broke attempt to shine in the Iowa caucus.
