Amazon is Bringing Quantum Computing Technology to Customers

With this new collaboration, developers can now easily build innovative applications on the AWS API and run them from the 5G network node closest to their end users.

Naturally, quantum computers remain a very niche - not to mention hugely expensive - proposition, with still a very long way to go in terms of developing the tech. "Bringing together the full capabilities of Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband and AWS, the world's leading cloud with the broadest and deepest services portfolio, we unlock the full potential of our 5G services for customers to create applications and solutions with the fastest speeds, improved security, and ultra-low latency".

Boeing is an early adopter of Braket, and is experimenting with quantum computing to solve problems around fundamental materials science, complex system optimisation and secure communications, the airplane manufacturer's general manager of disruptive computing and networks Charles Toups said at the AWS Re:Invent developer meet in Las Vegas. Amazon has entered into a partnership with D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti for this. Bra-ket notation is commonly used to denote quantum mechanical states, and inspired the name of the service. It's a time when the race to dominate the quantum computing field is hotly contested. "It is a very powerful tool that can solve certain types of problems that are hard or impossible to solve classically". However, there's no shortage of customers wanting to experiment with the power of quantum computing, Amazon observes. As such, it is best to think of them like a GPU (graphics processing unit) or a math co-processor.

The AWS Quantum Solutions Lab program will help connect customers with quantum computing experts from Amazon, its technology and consulting partners and academia to "to develop internal expertise aimed at identifying practical uses of quantum computing and accelerating the development of quantum applications with meaningful impact".

"While the Center's work will be focused on solving longer-term technical challenges to quantum computing, some customers are ready to begin exploring quantum computing and gain experience now", AWS said in a statement. Like Microsoft's Quantum Lab in Sydney, the idea is to accelerate research and technological development.

Quantum computing has made some significant advances this year, meaning that Amazon is throwing its hat into an already quite crowded ring.
