England cricket team: Jeetan Patel appointed as spin bowling consultant

Jeetan Patel has been appointed as England's spin-bowling consultant for the tours of South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Former Black Caps spinner Jeetan Patel has announced his retirement from Wellington cricket this morning as he looks to transition into coaching - and he already has a job to work with.

He will play his last game for the Firebirds in the Super Smash against Central Stags at the Basin Reserve on December 18.

Patel has enjoyed a remarkable playing career with experiences the England management believe will be transferable as a coach. In particular, he added a yard of pace to his offspin and developed into a far more consistent, though still aggressive, lower-order batsman.

Patel ended this year's County Championship with Warwickshire, taking 64 wickets at an average of 26.75.

Patel has made a decision to bring his 19-year career with Wellington to a close after 307 appearances for his hometown with a spin bowling consultant job available with England.

Patel had performed a role, similar to that of a bowling consultant, during the T20I leg of England's tour of New Zealand. Patel has a fair amount of knowledge of English conditions as well, having played for Warwickshire.

The 39-year-old will also be part of the white ball stage of the South African tour, which includes three ODIs and three IT20s.

England will play four Tests, three one-day internationals and three T20s in South Africa before travelling to Sri Lanka for two Tests at the end of March.
