Federer to become first living person to appear on Swiss coin

The 38-year-old 20-time Grand Slam champion is regarded by many as the greatest tennis player ever and is a national hero in Switzerland.

Anticipating high demand for the coin, Swissmint has launched for the first time a pre-sale of an "uncirculated quality" of the coin.

Thus, Roger has become the first living Swiss with a commemorative coin, with a 50 franc gold coin ready to be minted in May next year.

"Thank you Switzerland and Swissmint for this incredible honour and privilege", Federer said in an Instagram post.


The Swiss government has chose to honor Roger Federer with the special award, producing produce a commemorative 20 franc silver coin with Federer's image on it.

The Swiss government commented on his career in the announcement saying Federer is "probably Switzerland's most successful individual sportsman, he is also the ideal ambassador for Switzerland".

The "head" side of the coin indicates that Federer is playing one hand with one hand.

Fans can also order these coins and they are rated at approximately 30 Swiss francs. They will be dispatched in January.
