Halo: Reach immediately becomes one of the most-played games on Steam

Subsequent mainline Halo games (Reach, 4 and 5) skipped PC entirely - until yesterday, 3rd December 2019, when Microsoft released Halo: Reach on PC, the first game in The Master Chief Collection to be available on the home of keyboard and mouse. It'll also include crossplay between the Steam and Windows versions of the game.

The solid start would appear to validate Microsoft's strategy, announced earlier this year, to release more of its games on Steam, rather than keeping them exclusive to the Microsoft Store. Until then, PC players are enjoying Halo: Reach in their droves. Exclusives can boost storefronts-witness the success of the Epic Games Store-but Microsoft's implementation of Universal Windows Apps complicates things for mods, overlays, and other external tools. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST Campaign, and Halo 4 are also included in Game Pass membership and will be available on each game's respective release date, with the collection coming to a conclusion in 2020. Halo: Reach can also be purchased individually for $9.99 United States dollars. Note that you don't have to purchase both of these options - we've seen some confusion out there. Invite them and they'll get prompted to join you.

"Today is an exciting day as the first big step in the journey to bring Halo: The Master Chief Collection to PC but there's plenty more work to be done", a message from Microsoft explains.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft Store version of Halo: MCC doesn't support Xbox Play Anywhere or cross-play between Xbox One and PC, though cross-saves between the two platforms is there. The team also just launched a new Halo Support website, which should be a useful resource for any post-launch issues. For a limited time, you can get 3 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for just $1, which will give you access to Halo: MCC on both Windows 10 and Xbox One.
