Four killed after stolen UPS truck chase ends with shootout

Police in Miramar tweeted that there had been an "officer involved shooting" with "multiple fatalities", and that no law enforcement had been killed.

Police said a woman was shot during the robbery.

"It's very early in the investigative process", Piro said. "There are a lot of questions that are still unanswered".

Hudak said he did not know whether the people succeeded in taking anything from the jewelry store. She was later reportedly in stable condition. Police "terminated" the chase 20 miles away in Broward County.

The incident came to an end when the UPS truck encountered stopped traffic at an intersection. A shootout ensued, which left the two robbers, the hostage and one bystander dead. A silent alarm back at the jewelry store alerted law enforcement who pursued the robbers. The fourth victim, in another vehicle at the intersection, was "an innocent bystander", Piro said.

"This is what risky people do to get away", Hudak, the Coral Gables chief, said. "And this is what people will do to avoid capture".

Piro said it would be "completely inappropriate" to discuss whether the UPS driver or the bystander may have been hit by officers' gunfire. A stray bullet pierced the wall of the local city hall, located just across the street from Regent Jewelers.

Urquia said he hurried outside his office to find a city security guard already on the phone with police.

According to Hudak, a female employee in the store was injured during the robbery.

The truck led police on a long chase, hopping curbs, doing U-turns and maneuvering around other vehicles and police. First responders later carried a stretcher from the truck to an ambulance.

When the stolen UPS truck came to a stop, police officers on scene opened fire at the truck, fatally striking multiple people.

UPS spokesman David Graves said they are staying in touch with authorities.

UPS released a statement, saying, "We are deeply saddened to learn a UPS service provider was a victim of this senseless act of violence. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of our employee and the other victims involved in this incident".
