Persons Accused in Hyderabad Rape-Murder Case Shot Dead in Police Encounter

The family members of 27-year-old Hyderabad veterinarian expressed gratitude towards the police for shooting dead the four accused in an "encounter" Friday morning.

"The four accused were killed in an encounter with police", V C Sajjanar, Cyberabad Police Commissioner was quoted by news agency PTI as saying. "Having no other option, we had to fire at them and all of them died on the spot", the police said.

Reacting to the development, the victim's father said, "my daughter got justice today".

"There was an incident and the four accused have been killed".

Reportedly, the accused were shot dead by the police during an escape bid.

Girls along with activists take part in a candle light protest over the Hyderabad rape and murder case, in New Delhi. The court was taking so long to deliver its verdict when the accused themselves accepted the crime.

According to government figures, police registered 33,658 cases of rape in India in 2017, an average of 92 rapes every day. They punctured her two-wheeler and pretended to help her before raping her.

The four men were arrested on charges of raping, murdering and burning the body of the veterinary doctor, who had parked her scooter on a busy highway on November 27.

Different teams of Cyberabad police, probing the horrific crime, carried out further searches both at the place where the victim was raped and also where her body was set ablaze. They were in remanded in seven days' judicial custody.

Amid spiralling outrage, the Telangana Law Department had approved a fast-track court to try the case.
