R Kelly facing bribery charges possibly related to 1994 marriage to Aaliyah

R Kelly facing bribery charges possibly related to 1994 marriage to Aaliyah

According to an insider familiar with the particular case, Jane Doe 1 is Aaliyah. "New charge against R. Kelly linked to his marriage to Aaliyah", Anton tweeted on Thursday.

Kelly's attorney, Douglas Anton, told The Associated Press the latest charge against his client was "ridiculous and absurd".

R. Kelly was already facing charges of racketeering, kidnapping, forced labor and sexual exploitation, just in Brooklyn.

The indictment filed in NY alleges that R. Kelly "and others worked to recruit and groom women and girls for illegal sexual activity and to maintain control over them, including isolating them from friends and family members", NBC News writes.

The 52-year-old R&B singer, known for such hits as "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Bump N' Grind", was arrested in Chicago in July on separate sets of charges brought by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn and Chicago. Kelly, whose given name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was acquitted in 2008 on charges of videotaping himself having sex with a girl who prosecutors allege was as young as 13.

"My understanding is that she did not claim to be 15, and in order to get married, she had to lie about her age", Greenberg said.

Kelly and Aaliyah got married in 1994 when he was 27.

One commenter wrote: 'Well the one who signed the marriage certificate at the time need to be charged too cause he knew and he took them'.

Aaliyah met Kelly when she was 12 years old. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges. The couple is accused of using falsified paperwork that stated she was 18, which is the age someone must be to marry without parental consent in IL, at the ceremony.

The new charge is an addition to a sweeping set of federal indictments filed against Kelly in July by prosecutors in NY and IL. Five Jane Does are referenced throughout the document, including three minors.

Maintaining his innocence, Kelly has denied this new charge which is coming 25 years later after the crime was allegedly perpetuated. The indictment accuses him of sexually exploiting underage girls and coercing them into illegal sexual activity. He had one victim travel in 2017 to a show on Long Island in NY, where he had unprotected sex with her without telling her "he had contracted an infectious venereal disease", in violation of NY law, they say. They also accused Kelly of obstructing justice by using threats and bribes, including payments of hundreds of thousands of dollars, to keep his victims quiet.

Kelly's past is catching up to him.
