Embiid suffers torn hand ligament

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will have surgery on a torn ligament in his left hand, the National Basketball Association said Thursday.

Despite his return to Monday's game, Embiid missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday to undergo further testing from a specialist.

Embiid has a torn radial collateral ligament in the fourth metacarpal in his left hand.

Without Embiid for a minimum of one to two weeks (the team said he'll be re-evaluated in that timeframe), the Sixers have to become a different team.

Embiid suffered the injury during the first quarter of Monday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Philadelphia coach Brett Brown admitted the 76ers would have to adjust to the absence of the big man from Cameroon.

The two-time All-Star is averaging 23.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 blocks this season.

Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris and Al Horford will be expected to pick up the load offensively, starting with today's game against the Boston Celtics.

"I just wanted to make sure that I do everything possible to try to get us a win, and I'm glad we got the win", he said.
