Long out, Hoke in as San Diego State's coach

He said during a press conference that he recently discussed being a defensive coordinator with a couple Power Five schools, with Syracuse known to be a school he visited. A 9-4 campaign in 2010 started a running 10-year bowl streak for the San Diego State program, and led to Hoke getting the main job in MI.

According to reports, Rocky Long is expected to step down at San Diego State with the plan being for DL coach Brady Hoke to take over the program.

Hoke, who was on the San Diego State staff in 2019, admitted it was surreal that he is head coach for a second time. He returned on Wednesday and the school quickly announced that Brady Hoke would be the new head football coach.

Head coach Brady Hoke argues a call with a official during the fourth quarter while playing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan Stadium on September 7, 2013 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Before becoming a head coach, Long had was the defensive coordinator at Wyoming, Oregon State and UCLA. "Obviously it worked out well for him and it worked out well for me, too".

Since taking over for Hoke in 2011, Long has led the Aztecs to nine straight winning seasons and three Mountain West conference titles.

Long brought Hoke back to SDSU last fall as defensive line coach.

The Aztecs were 10-3 last season, capped by a 48-11 victory over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl. Long was 81-38 and took San Diego State to a bowl game in all nine seasons. "I'm exhausted of being the head coach, but I love coaching".

The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kirk Kenney reported in December that four San Diego State assistant coaches were interviewing at new schools and could leave the program. "I was proud of everything we accomplished on the defensive side of the ball, particularly in the secondary, and I'm going to miss them". "It was probably one of the (most fun) years I've had in coaching".

"Number one, I want to thank you coach Long". Hoke was sacked after four seasons at MI and returned to the SDSU staff last fall.

Long's teams have won at least 10 games in four of the last five seasons. "I can assure you, we are going to keep going in the direction that we are going, and we always want to be better every day, and that's what we're going to try and do".
