Jared Leto Is Thirsty for Human Blood in First Morbius Trailer

The jury is still out until the trailer falls, of course, and we can see Leto in action and the general tone of the movie, but this first look at Morbium It is still enormously encouraging, however. The success of Venom at the box office proved just how valuable the property is to Sony, and on Monday, we got our first look at the next Spider-Man spin-off.

Sony is expanding its tangentially-related Spider-Verse with Morbius, another film that - like Venom before it - looks and sounds like it was inspired by a nu metal concept album released in 2000.

"One of Marvel's most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar victor Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius".

Based on this image alone, director Daniel Espinosa certainly seems to stay close to the character's established comic appearance. The character was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and first featured in "Amazing Spider-Man". You might not know the name Morbius yet, but you soon will with the Leto-starring film, which follows the titular anti-hero as he accidentally becomes the only living vampire. Leto, who last played the Joker in DC's "Suicide Squad", will play Michael Morbius, a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who tried to cure a rare blood disease using an experimental treatment that combines electroshock therapy and bats.

Morbius will be hitting theaters on July 31, 2020. Morbius also stars Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Morbius' fiance; Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, the villain of the film who also has the same blood disease as Morbius; Jared Harris as Morbius' mentor; and Tyrese Gibson as an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent. And perhaps most excitingly, JK Simmons is rumored to appear as J. Jonah Jameson, therefore officially briding the MCU and this Sony Universe.
