Seth Jones' injury provides Zach Werenski with a big test

General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen said Tuesday that Jones underwent successful surgery after spraining his ankle and suffering a hairline fracture in the first period against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

The Blue Jackets defenseman gained possession of the puck at centre ice and proceeded to skate all the way back behind his own goal to allow for fresh legs and a regroup.

The Blue Jackets, now occupying the first Eastern Conference wild-card spot, return to action on Thursday with a visit to the Buffalo Sabres. Philadelphia is hot on their tails with 69 points in one fewer game and Carolina is just a step behind the Flyers with 67 points in 55 games.

Gabriel Karlsson was recalled from the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters to replace Jones on Monday.

The matchup was the first meeting between the two teams since the wild-card Blue Jackets stunned the Presidents Trophy-winning Lightning in a physical four-game sweep during the first round of last season's playoffs. Entering Monday's game, Tampa Bay was in second place in the Atlantic Division with 75 points, five behind front-running Boston.

The Blue Jackets will sorely miss Jones, who leads the team in ice time per game (25:17) and has chipped in six goals and 30 points in 56 appearances. He finished the game with 23 minutes and 35 seconds of ice time, including nearly 10 minutes in the third period of the 2-1 loss, scoring the team's only goal in the second period.

Columbus Blue Jackets star defenceman Seth Jones has been sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury.
