WHO Hopes to Develop Coronavirus Vaccine Within 18 Months

It is known that the number of people who died of this serious virus in China has crossed 1100 on Wednesday.

At a news briefing on Tuesday, the World Health Organization said it had decided on the name after consulting with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Organization for Animal Health.

More than 42,200 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in China.

The disease caused by a new virus that emerged late a year ago in China and has since sickened tens of thousands of people now has an official name: COVID-19.

The commission added that 8,204 patients remained in severe condition, and 16,067 people were suspected of being infected with the virus. 97 deaths from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps were reported.

Meanwhile, WHO sent an advance team to China this week for an global mission to examine the epidemic.

Dr. Zhong Nanshan, a leading epidemiologist who helped in the combat against the SARS epidemic in 2003, says some provinces reported improvement with declining numbers of new cases. "It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks".

As infections from COVID-19 coronavirus continue to rise, a senior United Nations health expert on Thursday said that there were some indications that disease transmission outside China might not be the tip of the "iceberg" that had been feared. On Feb. 13, the number of fatalities doubled, and new confirmed cases rose by nearly 15,000.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement speaking to journalists in Geneva.

"WHO stands ready to provide any additional support to the Government, especially in building preparedness capacities for COVID19", he added, before noting that he was "deeply grateful to the Government, particularly Prime Minister Hun Sen", for their gesture. At the same time, the coronavirus that started from China has spread to 24 countries so far.

Since the beginning of the outbreak in December, the virus has spread to about two dozen countries.

"With 99% of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world", he told more than 400 researchers and national authorities, including some taking part by video conference from mainland China and Taiwan.

The head of World Health Organization renewed a call for worldwide solidarity, praising the Cambodian Government's decision to allow the Westerdam cruise ship, which had been stranded for several days, to dock in the country, as an appropriate response to the outbreak. Three cruise ships have either experienced delayed port clearance or have been denied entry to ports.

The passengers and crew members who had the virus were transferred to hospitals for treatment, while those still on board were confined in the cabins.
