Deaths Rise to 1,868 in China as Nation Battles Coronavirus Epidemic

More than 12,000 people have recovered and been discharged, according to health commission figures. "Every scenario is still on the table", Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

Trade fairs, sports competitions and cultural events have also been disrupted.

The research was cited by World Health Organization officials, who said the coronavirus - known as COVID-19 - was "less deadly" than severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and Middle East respiratory syndrome.

In terms of occupation, patients who reported being retirees had the highest case fatality rate at about 5 per cent, and those in Hubei Province had a fatality rate that was more than seven-fold higher at almost 3 per cent compared to patients in other regions of China, the study noted.

An 83-year-old cured patient gestures as she leaves the Leishenshan (Thunder God Mountain) Hospital in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, yesterday.

The latest news comes after another doctor who worked in Wuhan, Li Wenliang, succumbed to the coronavirus after being accused of spreading fake news when he first raised concerns over the "Sars-like" virus.

However, all the cases were diagnosed clinically and investigated by trained epidemiologists, they said. "We need to prepare for a possible rebound of the COVID-19 epidemic in the coming weeks and months", the researchers warned. "Trends can change as new populations are affected", Tedros said.

COVID19: WHO says 'too early to tell' if reported decline will continue

The seeming drop in the number of cases follows a large spike last week after hard-hit Hubei province began counting cases by doctors' diagnoses without waiting for laboratory test results.

The US Centres for Disease Control says between 26 million to 36 million Americans contracted seasonal flu between Oct 2019 and Feb 8 this year, and there were between 14,000 to 36,000 deaths - a fatality rate of around 0.1%.

That includes deliberately infecting other people by violating quarantine, harming healthcare workers who are caring for people infected with the virus, and corruption involving products and funding meant to fight the epidemic.

The COVID-19 cases include relatively few children, and the risk of death rises with age.

On the 80 Indians, mostly students, in Wuhan, the envoy said that his government is taking "good care" of them and the "universities have designated personnel to deliver masks and other protective materials to the students and send food and daily necessities to their residence regularly". There is no vaccine yet for the virus, nor any known effective therapeutics. More than half of the cases have been on a cruise ship quarantined off Japan. New cases outside the province declined for the 14th consecutive day.

The study, released by the country's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, showed the death rate at 2.3 percent - falling below 1 percent for patients in their 30s and 40s. The hospital was designated to exclusively treat virus-infected patients.
