Flight to evacuate Canadians from quarantined ship 'expected' to depart Thursday

Japanese passengers who test negative will begin disembarking as early as Wednesday, the original deadline for the end of ship's quarantine, Japanese health minister Katsunobu Kato said.

Fourteen Americans among the more than 300 people flown back to the United States from a cruise ship docked off the coast of Japan have tested positive for novel coronavirus during the evacuation process but were permitted to continue to the USA, according to the Departments of State and Health and Human Services.

In a Sunday press release, San Luis Obispo County health officers said they had been advised by state and federal authorities to prepare for the possibility that passengers who test positive for coronavirus, but longer require hospitalization, to housed at Camp Roberts for the remainder of a two-week quarantine.

Fewer than 700 cases have been reported in other countries and even within China the epidemic is affecting "a very tiny, tiny, tiny proportion of people", Ryan said. "It's been two days, they are resting ... they have fever. My mother is coughing a bit". "We have no idea when we get to get home", she said.

The Diamond Princess has been in lockdown in Yokohama for about a fortnight with about 3700 passengers but the virus has spread.

A total of 169 people on the ship have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 48 hours, bringing the total to 500, in the latest cruise news.

Theresa Tam, chief public health officer at the Public Health Agency of Canada, said on Saturday that 15 Canadians on the Diamond Princess have tested positive for the virus.

"We have done tests for everyone (on the ship)", he told reporters.

Two Central New York couples have returned to the United States after spending more than a week quarantined on a cruise ship in Japan. But they will have to spend another quarantine period at USA military facilities including Travis to make sure they don't have the new virus that's been sweeping across Asia.

"Thanks, but we're fine", Smith said he told them.

An evacuation of Canadian passengers to a Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, Ontario is slated to take place soon, per Global Affairs. They were repatriated by Canada from the Chinese province of Hubei, which includes the city of Wuhan, considered as the epicentre of the outbreak. As of February 11, 1,018 people have died from the respiratory illness.

Yoshihide Suga, the government's top spokesman, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the government is "currently conducting preparations so that clinical trials using HIV medication on the novel coronavirus can start as soon as possible".

Across mainland China, the total number of coronavirus cases rose by 2,051 to 70,635, according to the World Health Organization.

In about 14 percent of cases, the virus causes severe symptoms, including pneumonia and shortness of breath, and in about 5 percent patients will have critical symptoms including respiratory failure, septic shock and multi-organ failure, he said. The coronavirus outbreak originated in central China's Hubei province in December a year ago and has spread to several countries, including India.
