American startup Eau de Space gathered more than 40 thousand dollars for the production of perfume that smells like space. They needed to get used to the smell so there wouldn't be any surprises once they were up in space. The us government agency wanted to assist astronauts in creating the conditions for realistic training before propelling into orbit. Pearce is a chemist and founder of Omega Ingredients, a company focused on "creating the highest quality, origin-oriented flavors and natural ingredients for the food and beverage industry", says his website.

Pearce was originally contracted by NASA to recreate the smell in 2008, and it took him approximately four years to develop it, Richmond said. "Now we need your help to mass manufacturer it so that everyone can experience the smell of space for themselves". Allegedly, in addition to the hype building around Eau De Space, Richmond also said that the company will also plan to release a fragrance called the Smell Of The Moon.

"It's like the smell of a gun, right after you shoot", Peggy Whitson, an astronaut and former resident of the International Space Station, told CNN in a 2002 interview about the smell of space.

"I think it kind of has nearly a bitter kind of smell in addition to being smoky and burned". The extraterrestrial explorers have described the odour of space as the smell of seared steak, welding fumes, hot metal, rum, raspberries and a little like gunpowder too.

Eau de Space is set to go on sale in October 2020, retailing at US$15.

Thanks to this scent outside the norm, Matt Richmond wants to increase the interest of young students for science learning, by promoting " experiential education ".
