Elderly Muslim man stabbed to death outside Toronto mosque

Toronto police say they're investigating the possibility that the stabbing death of a volunteer caretaker at a west-end mosque is linked to another recent homicide in the city.

They say they then found 59-year-old Iva Barcelos with multiple stab wounds inside the house.

Police say there are no outstanding suspects, and no threat to public safety.

The victims were died at the scene.

"In terms of if we think the murders are linked, it is too early to say if they are connected but at this stage, we can not rule it out as a possibility".

When officers arrived, a man was found suffering from multiple stab wounds on the street in front of the home, police said.

Authorities said the suspect, described with a slender build and was wearing a black hoodie and black pants, fled the area on foot. "We've got to be cognizant of the possibility that they are connected". Police said the alleged killer has a slim build and was wearing a black hoodie and dark trousers.

"We pray that our brother is in a better place".

In a statement issued on social media on Saturday night, the International Muslim Organization of Toronto said the victim is one of their members and the incident happened near the mosque.

"We know that many of us are saddened beyond words, and are afraid and anxious after such an act of violence struck so close to home", the statement says, noting those affected can contact a mental health hotline or arrange a meeting with a spiritual counsellor.

Anyone who knew where he was before the homicide is urged to call police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
