Querrey leaves Russian Federation amid COVID-19 drama

Commentator Jose Morgado responded to Rothenberg's menace with wide-eyes emojis, tennis author Nikhila Makker tweeted "huge yikes" and journalist Carole Bouchard wrote: "Sam Querrey did what!?" A team of doctors was sent to evaluate the tennis player's situation, but the world No. 49 did not answer the door.

The ATP said it was investigating an incident at the tournament, but did not name Querrey. He traveled to the tournament with his wife, Abby, and eight-month-old son Ford.

The tournament said Querrey and his wife tested positive Sunday, the day before main draw play started.

Under ATP protocol, a player can be fined a maximum of $ 100,000 (about $ 85,500) and a suspension of up to three years for violating the corona rules.

"Under the ATP regulations, players are supposed to take the tests every fourth day".

Sam Querrey could face significant discipline for fleeing a country after testing positive for COVID-19. He was withdrawn from the competition, and the family was asked to isolate together at a hotel. However, he then received a call from someone from the Russian health authorities who said the family would be visited by another doctor and if they were found to have symptoms they could be forcibly hospitalised. He and his family then left the hotel prior to the second scheduled examination on Tuesday. The organising committee of the tournament had prepared premium apartments for this goal.

"As Querrey told an ATP representative, he left Russian Federation with his family on a private plane", the tournament said, quoting information from ATP Tour.

The ATP has issued a message to players following the incident, stressing that it is critical players adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

"The tournament organizing committee has done it all to ensure the safety of the players, the ATP representatives and all the services of the tournament", the statement continued.

"We are satisfied with the interaction with the organs of Rospotrebnadzor of St. Petersburg and wit the continuation of the tournament in accordance with adopted standards". They reportedly do not plan to reveal their whereabouts, even to the health authorities of the country in which they are staying.

Local health authorities recommended that Querrey and his family should move to a private apartment, CNN reported.

"Sitting in the back of their hired jet so as to keep as distant as possible from pilots, the Querreys were delivered to what is only being described as a "nearby European country" which didn't require a negative test for entry". He added that the family is staying at an AirBnb.
