Biden email episode illustrates risk to Trump from Giuliani

As the story about emails allegedly connected to Hunter Biden - uncovered from a laptop of unknown origin and through a questionable chain of custody - continues to circulate, new information about the origins of the story surfaces as well.

"We know that this whole smear on Joe Biden comes from the Kremlin", Schiff said on CNN.

On Thursday night, ABC News host George Stephanopoulos, a former Democratic advisor, sparked controversy when he declined to ask about Hunter's emails during a 90-minute town hall.

News first reported about the probe on Thursday.

Twitter was wrong to block weblinks to an unverified political story, CEO Jack Dorsey said on Friday, as the company responded to criticism over its handling of the story that had prompted cries of censorship from the right. The newspaper said the emails of Hunter Biden, a California resident, were found in a laptop that had been dropped off for service at a DE fix shop by an unidentified man who never picked it up. He said he then made a copy of the emails and images on the hard drives, and provided them to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to Giuliani, Trump's lawyer. The newspaper claimed that this communication contradicted the statements made by Joe Biden that he had never spoken to his son about his business dealings when he was in charge of the Obama administration's Ukraine policy.

Given the objectively widespread reach of the Post article on its platform, why did Facebook even bother making an announcement that's 1) totally antithetical to Facebook's generally hands-off approach to conservative-leaning media and 2) not enough to appease anybody who feels that Facebook should scrutinize any dubiously-reported "scandal" just before the election?

On Friday, President Donald Trump claimed Biden had a "very bad showing" at his town hall with ABC's Stephanopoulos and slammed the network for not asking about Hunter. "There is nothing worse than a corrupt politician".

That hasn't stopped the FBI from investigating whether the emails are part of a foreign influence operation.

The emails surfaced as US officials have been warning that Russian Federation, which backed Trump´s 2016 campaign through hacking of Democratic emails and a covert social media campaign, is interfering again this year.

Andrii Derkach, the Ukrainian parliamentarian who is one of Giuliani's principal contacts, was mentioned in an August intelligence assessment that described a concerted Russian effort to disparage Biden.

The newspaper said national security adviser Robert O'Brien had warned Trump that information Giuliani brought back from Ukraine should be considered contaminated by Russian Federation, but that Trump brushed off the warning.

According to news agency Reuters, Republican lawmakers slammed the social media companies' actions, with US Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell saying that the blocking of the story was "reprehensible" and that there should be no "speech police" in the United States. In the RealClearPolitics polling average, Biden leads Trump by 9 points.
