London moves to Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions to curb rising infections

London moves to Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions to curb rising infections

The move comes after the city's mayor, Sadiq Khan, said that the capital had reached a "critical moment" in its fight against Covid-19.

Birmingham, part of the West Midlands, and other areas have been put under further restrictions after a rise in confirmed coronavirus cases, with London, Essex, and York set to enter the higher infection tiers from midnight.

As of Saturday, Londoners will be prohibited from mixing with other households in homes and other indoor settings, including hospitality venues, after the United Kingdom government agreed with London mayor Sadiq Khan that the city required tougher restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

"Now, I know that these measures are not easy but I also know that they are vital", Hancock said in a statement to the House of Commons (lower house of parliament).

United Kingdom health minister Helen Whateley announced the news to London members of Parliament in a call on Thursday morning.

Millions of Londoners will face tougher Tier 2 Covid measures from Saturday, with a ban on households mixing indoors, local MPs have been told.

"Nobody wants to see more restrictions, but this is deemed to be necessary in order to protect Londoners by myself, London council leaders and ministers", Khan said.

Under Tier 2, households are also barred from mixing in pubs and restaurants and people should aim to reduce use of public transport.

"Further restrictive measures which adversely impacts trade, already at far lower levels than before the pandemic, without any discerning targeted support, could be the death knell", says Robert Hayton, head of United Kingdom property tax at Altus Group. The Liverpool City Region has been placed in the "Very High" level since Wednesday.

That is the highest risk category in the government's new three-tier regional COVID-19 strategy and would require restrictions such as closing bars and banning social gatherings outside one's own home.
