Google to shift Hangouts users to Google Chat by next year

To ensure a smooth transition from Hangouts to Chat, Google will help automatically migrate Hangouts conversations, along with contacts and saved history. It means that all the platforms by Google that now has integrated Hangouts service will either be removed or replaced with Google Chat or Meet.

It will start showing in-product notifications to affected users starting October with relevant guidance on managing their remaining calling credits. Chat has the same phishing protections available in Gmail and thus if a link is sent to an user via Chat, it will be checked against real-time data from Safe Browsing and flagged if it's found to be malicious.

To recap there, Google Chat will be available to you during the first half of next year, assuming you are still using Hangouts. Google will do a bunch of behind-the-scenes work to get you migrated over and able to rock as soon as that occurs.

Since that info above only talked about a vague "first half of 2021" time frame, I'll add that the Google Workspace blog offered more important and precise dates. The new changes are a part of the company's move to replace Chat with Hangouts. At present, it's an opt-in change. As per the reports, at the end of 2021, Hangouts will be shut down. Customers who only have enabled Chat, with classic Hangouts completely disabled, will not be impacted.

Google Fi that is integrated within Hangouts, will be available to use on Messages by Google. Fi users will be able to make voice calls and check voicemail from Messages for web, manage conversations from Messages across devices (even when their phone is off) and migrate their existing Hangouts conversations. The timeline for it has shifted a number of instances, however we'd truly be getting nearer, in line with a number of updates Google shared this morning associated to their previously nice messaging platform. In about a month, they'll provide more details on how that will happen.

Because Hangouts will make way for Chat, that means Google will need to make changes to Hangouts for Google Fi users.

On a few associated notes, Google introduced at the moment that early subsequent yr, they may take away Google Fi help/integration from Hangouts.
