Liverpool have been dealt a massive injury blow with the news that star defender Virgil van Dijk will be out of action for months.

It would be criminal if Pickford got away with not receiving any post-game ban, given the nature of his challenge.

I believe Van Dijk is the Reds' most important player, such is his world-class level of consistency at the back, and his standing as possibly the world's leading centre-back. The game saw the 26-year-old return to the limelight for a combination of things, good and bad.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are hopeful that an injury sustained by midfielder Thiago Alcantara against Everton does not prove to be serious.

It should have had a red card for this.

"You look at it now and think can Liverpool win the league without Van Dijk there?" former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

After the match, Richarlison released a statement on social media to apologise for his challenge on Thiago.

"The problem we have at the moment is that I am not really in a good mood, I have injured players in the dressing room and that is not good".

"When I realised we were going to crash, I retracted my foot but my knee caught him on the way thorugh, which was inevitable due to the speed of the play".

"I already sent a message to him apologizing and I also do it here publicly. I hope that he can recover well and soon". I also apologise to my teammates, the club and the fans for leaving them with 10 men.
