More Covid-19 cases in Laois as cases nationally rise

Additionally, the ministry has advised of 78 new cases of the virus over the same 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed positive cases nationally to 8,274.

The State has once again reported fewer than four thousand new infections with the lowest single-day positivity rate in months.

The state Department of Health reported 530 new cases and no deaths on Sunday to give the state 98,201 cases with 2,239 deaths. This Sunday's case count is the highest reported on a usual Sunday (excluding last week's combined Saturday and Sunday numbers) since 2,564 on September 6.

There is now a total of 49,962 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.


The previous high of 1,161 was set back on July 29th, followed by a steady decline that lasted nearly two months.

Government officials use current hospitalizations to decide the next action in dealing with the pandemic. Hospitalizations remain short of the more than 2,200 reported at the peak of the crisis in mid-July. That is a slight decrease from the week before, when an average of 4.6% of new tests were positive, according to health department data. Two weeks ago, the county had an average of 383 daily cases.

Globally, more than 39.8 million cases have been reported and more than 1.1 million people have died as of Sunday, the data show. The number came after more than 30,000 tests were processed Saturday.
