Trump takes swipe at disease expert Dr Fauci over mask guidance

"And then to come in, unless you absolutely know that you're not infected, there are many people that are not going to want to take that risk".

He offered a reminder that Dr Fauci at one point said that people should not wear a mask.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has taken some of his most overt swipes yet at Dr Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease expert in the USA, while campaigning in North Carolina.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has issued a new Thanksgiving warning when it comes to holding large family gatherings.

Fauci also noted that he won't be celebrating Thanksgiving with his children because they live in three different states and decided not to come due to "concern for me and my age". "Given the fluid and dynamic nature of what's going on right now in the spread and the uptick of infections, I think people should be very careful and prudent about social gatherings", Fauci said.

The efforts Fauci advocated include uniform wearing of masks or face coverings; keeping distance; avoiding crowded places, particularly indoors; maximizing time spent outdoors or in indoor spaces with good ventilation; and regularly washing hands.

According to a CNN report on Sunday, Fauci denied consenting to being featured in the Trump campaign ad and said that his words in the ad that were spun to praise the President's handling of the COVID-19 crisis were taken out of context.

Fauci, who has described the assaults towards him as "weird", pushed again on that criticism on Monday, saying he was extra of a "realist".

The president has urged people to not be afraid of the virus or let it "dominate" their lives - but Fauci pushed back at the suggestion.

"If I'm a young, healthy person, I might think, 'This disease is not going to bother me, ' so they're not going to participate in measures created to limit the spread of the virus", he said.

Trump and his aide Hope Hicks, who was also recently infected with the coronavirus, did not wear masks today.

"He said, 'This is not a threat, this is not a problem, don't worry about it.' It's the craziest thing", Trump said.

Asked whether Trump is putting the people who travel with him in peril, he replied: "The answer to that is no, he is not".
