Brazil defeat Uruguay, Gonzalez scores for Argentina

Arthur and Richarlison scored against Uruguay in the first half to strengthen Brazil's hopes of World Cup qualification. Argentina and Lionel Messi sit in second place in the table on 10 points after they defeated Peru 2-0 with first-half strikes from both Nicolas Gonzales and Lautaro Martinez.

Ecuador, playing on their home turf in high-altitude Quito, hammered Colombia 6-1.

Uruguay had a goal disallowed with 14 minutes remaining as the five times world champions made it four wins out of four and extended their unbeaten run against Uruguay to 19 years.

VAR was called into action and the referee would later bump up the initial yellow card to a straight red for Cavani.

The top four teams in the group qualify automatically for Qatar 2022 and the fifth-placed side goes into an inter-regional playoff.

Brazil had most of the ball, but could find no way through a well-marshalled Uruguay midfield.

Uruguay, who were without Luis Suarez after the forward's positive coronavirus test, hit the crossbar twice in the first half before their chances took a further hit when Edinson Cavani was sent off in the 71st minute.

Roberto Firmino squandered a great chance two minutes later when he was denied by Campana, but Brazil would double their lead through Richarlison.

It was a cruel blow just before half time, emphasised when Uruguay skipper Diego Godin powered a header against the Brazil bar from a free kick by De La Cruz. Despite Manchester United's Edinson Cavani receiving a red card for a risky lunge on the 23-year-old, the Everton forward fortunately managed to avoid any injury and appears to have come away unscathed.
