India nears nine million coronavirus cases

India on Thursday reported over 46,000 fresh coronavirus infections.

India is now witnessing a steady decline in cases from its peak in September, with the country reporting fewer than 50,000 daily new infections during the last 13 days.

The number of new daily Covid-19 cases in India has risen by nearly 50 per cent in two days, in the week following the major Hindu festival of Diwali, with a record number of fatalities in the capital of New Delhi.

Officials in India's capital on Thursday quadrupled the fines dished out for people not wearing face masks as coronavirus cases soar in the megacity, overwhelming hospitals and graveyards even as the government resists calls for another lockdown. As of Thursday night there has been 5,10,630 confirmed cases and 8,041 deaths so far.

A total of 5,35,167 people have been fined for violating social distancing norms, not wearing masks or spitting in public places.

While the number of new daily infections on Wednesday is still roughly half of those recorded during India's mid-September peak, public health experts have urged caution as there has also been a nationwide drop in the number of tests. Up to 4,43,794 active cases remain in the country. It was the highest daily count so far this week.

The 585 new fatalities include 131 from Delhi, 100 from Maharashtra, 54 from West Bengal, 31 from Punjab, 30 from Haryana, 29 from Uttar Pradesh, 28 from Kerala, 23 from Chhattisgarh and 21 from Karnataka. The death toll has climbed to 7,873, while 4,11,759 patients have recovered. With this, the state's recovery count increased to 16,35,971. The fatalities recorded are the highest in a day coming in parallel to the sharp spike in cases being reported after a months-long lull.
