'Wipeout' contestant dies after competing in obstacle course

The show has been met by tragedy as a contestant died after completing the obstacle course. A cause of death has not yet been revealed, and the man's name had been withheld until relatives were notified, the publication writes.

Wipeout - originally airing from 2008 to 2014 on ABC - is getting an upcoming reboot through TBS.

Our law enforcement sources tell us they got a cardiac arrest call just before noon Wednesday, and medics on set had already started using a defibrillator on the contestant, who was experiencing chest pains after completing the course. Paramedics were then called and the man was taken to a local hospital, but he later passed away. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

Production was paused Thursday and Friday, and the show was heading into a preplanned week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. "Wipeout" contestants must undergo medical examinations in advance of participating, according to the sources, who added participants this season were also tested for Covid-19 prior to filming.

The show is being hosted by John Cena (The Suicide Squad) and Nicole Byer (Nailed It!) with Camille Kostek (I Feel Pretty) as the entrenched Host in the Field.

Endemol Shine North America, the production company behind the show, released a statement offering their condolences to the unnamed contestant. The TBS spokesperson said that they are "devastated to have learned of his passing", and their "deepest sympathy goes out to the family".
