Google, Facebook allow employees to work from home till end of 2020

"Responsible companies will need to embrace technology that measures employee productivity transparently, and in a way that both managers and employees can benefit".

Some Google offices will reopen in June, allowing 10pc to 15pc of workers to return, Pichai added.

While Elon Musk is eager to see Tesla employees return to work as soon as possible, Facebook and Google have said they expect most of their employees to work from home for the remainder of 2020. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced to company employees that they will have to continue working from home till the end of the year, while only a handful will be allowed to resume work at their company offices.

The moves mean employees can continue working from home for the rest of the year amid worries from staff over safety about returning to the office during the coronavirus pandemic. "Today, we announced anyone who can do their work remotely can choose to do so through the end of the year", said a spokesperson quoted by BBC.

The Chairman of early stage startup accelerator and venture fund, Axilor Ventures, also said that numerous smaller Indian startups have found that they are as effective working out of home and are now wondering whether they require permanent office space at all.

Gopalakrishnan believes at least 20-30 per cent of IT employees would continue to work from home even after the lockdown is lifted and the situation returns to normalcy.

In taking such a step, Google is the latest tech giant to do so.

Companies could ask employees to stay at home and work for longer as they redesign their office spaces to cater to new social distancing guidelines.

Pichai has issued special instructions to his employees in which he has said to take care of family members along with himself.

Google originally said it would keep its work from home policy until 1 June, but is extending it for seven more months.
