The UK has recorded 744 more deaths, the highest daily toll since last Spring, along with more than 39,000 new coronavirus cases - the highest case number yet. This is the sixth day in a row that cases have been over 2,000.

While the number of hospitalizations decreased to 1,052, there were four more people in intensive care, for a total of 146.

On December 22, the province administered 1,891 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 for a total of 7,229 doses given to Quebecers since the vaccine became available.

New COVID-19 cases in Quebec reached an all-time high on December 23, just days before the province enters a lockdown and non-essential stores prepare to close until January 11.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced the new Tier Four restrictions for London and other parts of England to combat an alarming surge in infections linked to a new virulent strain, which is said to be about 70 percent more transmissible.

There are 528,354 confirmed cases in Canada.

It brings the total number of cases in the United Kingdom to 2,149,551.

Public health is also reporting a total of 158,201 cases that have been deemed "recoveries". Of the newly-added deaths, 10 have occurred in the past day, 14 between December 15 and December 20, one from earlier in December, and three from an "unknown date".
