Nick Saban wins Bear Bryant coach of the year award

Alabama Coach Nick Saban, speaking shortly before he won a coach of the year award named for Crimson Tide legend Paul "Bear" Bryant, sounded like the hiring was all but done.

The Texans fired O'Brien as General Manager and head coach in October after an 0-4 start.

ESPN's domestic coverage of U.S. college football's National Championship between Alabama Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes is set to be the least viewed matchup since the introduction of a title-deciding game.

"I think he did a really good job in Houston when he was the head coach", Saban told Brandon Kyle Scott of Houston's Sports Radio 610.

The 51-year-old O'Brien was sacked in October, four games into a Texans season that began 0-4 and ended with a 4-12 record.

Prior to his time in Houston, O'Brien was the head coach at Penn State in 2012 and 2013, producing a 15-9 record with the team serving a bowl ban tied to the Jerry Sandusky child-sex-abuse scandal. "I've always tried to have the best knowledge and experience I can for our players and their development, and I certainly think he can contribute to that in a very positive way".

The disjointed season, questions about a possible postponement, and lack of hype/buildup because it followed six National Football League playoff games, all likely contributed to the low ratings.

O'Brien, 51, was born in Dorchester and worked as an assistant in New England in several roles before ascending to the job of offensive coordinator in 2011. O'Brien was Duke's offensive coordinator in 2005-06 and Georgia Tech's offensive coordinator in 2001-02.
