Sabalenka clinches third straight title with easy win in Abu Dhabi

The Belarusian defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour to secure her 15th win on the bounce.

Will Aryna Sabalenka be able to extend her unbeaten series of 14 matches?

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka made a strong start to her 2021 season with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Veronika Kudermetova of Russian Federation to clinch the WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi yesterday and extend her winning streak to 15 matches.

"If I take my idol from tennis, it was Maria Sharapova", Kudermetova said in Abu Dhabi.

In the semifinals, Sabalenka beat Maria Sakkari in three sets while Kudermetova backed up her stunning quarterfinal win over Elina Svitolina by defeating Marta Kostyuk.

"She played lights-out tennis, she gave me zero chances", said the 22nd-ranked Sakkari. "I'm going to Australia, I'm confident with one thing, that I will do everything I can to win matches".

"I'm really happy to keep winning and I'll do everything I can to keep winning", Sabalenka told reporters.

Sabalenka reached the 13th WTA singles final of her career at the age of only 22, taking just 57 minutes to see the back of ninth seed Sakkari.

In the final on 13 January the Belarusian will face either world number 99 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine or world number 46 Veronika Kudermetova of Russian Federation.

She made light work of tour friend Kudermetova on Wednesday - winning in 66 minutes. That's why I am really proud of and happy with this title.

Kudermetova is through to her maiden WTA final and takes a 5-3 win-loss record against top-10 opposition into her clash with Sabalenka.

"As soon as you stop working on improving your game, you'll start losing, and I think that's the key of successful people", she added.
