"He was an fantastic athlete and I got those genes from him", Rodman said about her famous dad. (Don't worry, Thorns, her diet has cleaned up considerably in the past few years).

Trinity Rodman is one of the United States' best young soccer players.

So Wednesday was exhilarating, but it was also emotional; the culmination of almost two decades of work geared towards a goal which did not always seem attainable.

Rodman was set to attend Washington State and play the fall season, but the coronavirus pandemic meant the season was moved to the spring.

"I just can't believe that this is happening", Ryan said through a wide smile while packed with family members on a Zoom call during the draft broadcast.

Racing Louisville selected University of North Carolina defender Emily Fox went No. 1 in Wednesday's NWSL Draft, while the Washington Spirit selected Trinity Rodman with its second pick. Kansas City may have to wait a bit to see Pickett up close, as she has said she'll stay in school to play the spring season.

Sky Blue initially had the next two selections, but after taking UNC midfielder/forward Brianna Pinto at No. 3 the team opted to trade the No. 4 pick to Kansas City for $175,000 in allocation money. Ekic, a senior at Louisville, was the ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

A new draft rule made all college players who had used three years of eligibility available in the draft, whether or not they had formally declared.

Thanks to a waiver obtained by the NWSL from the NCAA, players drafted have until January 22, 2021 to decide whether to report immediately to their NWSL club or at the conclusion of the spring NCAA season. The players have until January 22 to decide.

The four-round draft, held virtually because of COVID-19, was conducted live on Twitch.
