United States claims Chinese researchers had coronavirus symptoms before initial reported cases

A team of experts from the World Health Organization arrived in China last week to investigate the origins of the coronavirus. "The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017", the Department stated. "Understanding the origin of this pandemic is essential for global public health, economic recovery, and worldwide security", Pompeo said in a statement.

However, Chinese experts also stressed that Shi's article did not fix the direct host of the virus on mink, and scientists in different fields need to deepen their genome sequence research on mink to verify the possibility.

A new statement from the US Department of State accuses the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of "deadly obsession with secrecy and control" and claims the Wuhan Institute of Virology had been conducting experiments with a virus genetically similar to the new coronavirus.

Even with the new information, the State Department says it is hard to make definitive conclusions about the virus's origins because of China's lack of transparency from the very beginning of the outbreak.

This has led US officials to believe the researchers may have been infected with COVID-19 as a result of a lab experiment.

The allegations mark the latest move by the outgoing Trump administration to pressure China over the origins of the virus, just days before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

According to The Sun, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could declassify American intelligence concerning the lab as soon as Wednesday.

"The so-called fact sheet is another lie sheet produced by the USA side", said the Communist Party member. "This is also the last madness of Pompeo - Mr. Lies".

The Chinese Government has firmly rejected the U.S. allegations.

Beijing is increasing efforts to recast the coronavirus narrative amid growing scrutiny over its origins, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying earlier this month that "more and more research suggests that the pandemic was likely to have been caused by separate outbreaks in multiple places in the world". State media have played up research suggesting that there were cases in Italy and the USA that pre-date those in Wuhan, and hinted that the pathogen could have entered the country via frozen food or packaging.

"The CCP's [Chinese Communist Party's] deadly obsession with secrecy and control comes at the expense of public health in China and around the world", it said, adding that it was making public "previously undisclosed information", saying "the US government has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses".

Several researchers then fell ill with symptoms "consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses", it claims. "Nearly two million people have died".
