#DeadlineDay: Ainsley Maitland-Niles joins West Brom from Arsenal

For Ainsley Maitland-Niles, there is more at stake than just West Bromwich Albion's Premier League fate.

Sam Allardyce is desperate to add to his squad before the window closes with Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne set to become the third signing of the January window after Robert Snodgrass and Andy Lonergan.

The Athletic report that Leicester City were among the clubs to express an interest in signing Maitland-Niles on loan, possibly even with an option to buy.

Arsenal's clauses involved in the deals to loan out Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles strongly hint at Mikel Arteta's plans for the pair next year.

The 23-year-old has played a bit part role under Mikel Arteta so far this season, only registering five starts in the Premier League.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, praised Maitland-Niles, but he pointed out that the 23-year-old's problem is his playing position.

And while Maitland-Niles always fulfills his manager's wishes without hesitation and plays wherever he is picked to play, he prefers to be in the midfield line, and that is where Allardyce apparently wants him to play for the Baggies.

Right now, that leaves Southampton as the most likely destination for Maitland-Niles before Monday's transfer deadline.

Injuries to Dennis Praet and Wilfred Ndidi and Hamza Choudhury potentially leaving could leave Brendan Rodgers' men light in midfield, and while Maitland-Niles is said to be an option the same outlet adds it is unclear if their pursuit is now active, with no talks having taken place between the clubs.

The Magpies are keen to bring the England global to St. James' Park on loan for the rest of the season, but they are not the only ones interested in recruiting his services.
